On 14 July, the Folio Society unleashed its brand-new, limited-edition copy of A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. With only 1,000 copies available worldwide, it has instant appeal to fans and collectors. However, you might think that the book’s price would be quite the hurdle for many.
Available from the Folio Society for £1,500 or $2,200, not including any potential postage and packaging, it’s obviously a huge price increase on standard editions and even Folio’s own special editions from the series. Even so, Westeros continues to run hot across just about all forms of entertainment.
A Game of Thrones Sells Out in Two Hours
By 6 pm UK time, following the 4 pm launch, over 850 copies were already sold. Shortly after, all 1,000 copies were sold. It’s a very expensive copy of the book, and yet, looking at the limited edition, it’s fair to see why. Within the pages, Jonathan Burton has created 12 full-page and four double-page colour illustrations to add to the experience.
Around them, readers will find eight illustrated chapter openers, nine family trees – which is a great help in this fictional setting – and nine illustrated house sigils. On the outside of the 872-page book, it’s fully bound in leather with a dragon skin design, gilded edges, and a clamshell box. It’s among Folio’s most impressive prints to date.
While the Westeros setting originates from this medium, the limited edition showcases its enduring appeal and ability to continue to expand and adapt. After all, this follows the other Folio editions, which cost £165 or $235 each. Elsewhere, the might of the setting continues to draw in fans around the world.
Even now, Game of Thrones is releasing new official games to the collection of slots online. Game of Thrones Jackpot King is the latest expansion of the hit series, nestling in alongside the likes of Luxor of Cleopatra and Big Bass Blast. Of course, beyond entertainment, GoT has spurred on a new trend in travel, with places like Banbridge in Northern Ireland continuing to see huge crowds come to its sites and the Studio Tour venue.
Releasing at a Perfect Time
The new limited-edition book, the new slot game, and all of the other accessible products will be enjoying a spike right now with the setting back in the headlines. House of the Dragon Season 3 appeared to land rather well with viewers. Following the hacked-up end to Season 2 – which was blamed on the strikes – 21.5 million people tuned in globally to its premiere.
As the series has gone on, essentially running the final two episodes of last season before starting the new one, viewership in the US has held quite steady, with the second episode seeing a 0.11 million bump on episode one. The consistency and coherency of the writing over that time, though, has become inconsistent, to say the least.
Even so, people will stay through the eight-episode run and likely for the grand final season in two years. It’s there that the biggest and most impactful CGI dragon battle will take place. In a more ground look at Westeros, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was excellent and quickly got renewed for a second season ahead of a 2027 launch.
A lot is going on in and around the world of Westeros, and the swift selling of Folio’s new limited edition book of A Game of Thrones, especially at its hefty price, further proves its continued popularity worldwide.
